Finger Joint Core FF Plywood

Plywood was first invented for industrial manufacturing and home construction.

Then it was introduced to concrete forming.

In many cases, the film faced plywood can only be used once. That means a huge waste for the projects if premium quality plywood are used.

Even in some good projects, there will be corners which need film faced plywood cut into size. That piece of plywood can not be reused again. So the cheap price finger joint core plywood can have its market.

The finger joint core plywood has only one advantage, that it is the cheapest film faced plywood on the market.

Setbacks of finger-joint core

  • Surface is not as good as full core plywood.
  • Bending strength is weaker than standard core plywood.

Common Problems With Film Faced Plywood

film faced plywood

The film faced plywood are mostly used as a concrete forming panels in the construction site. It is supported with LVL beams and poured with concrete. After the concrete cure, the film faced plywood can be taken from it.

film faced plywood for formwork

There are common problems with the film faced plywood used for concrete shuttering.

Film Crack

The bad quality film will crack under sunshine and rain. The main reason is the overlay film is not waterproof. Water can go through the filml so quickly that it swell the board before it is used.

How to fix this? Must use phenolic coated film with better thickness

Edge Swell

The plywood edge becomes uneven when they are layed up on the timber beams. The main reason is the rain goes into the veneer through the glue line at the edges. Edges are not protected well. This is a major problem because the uneven platform will not create an even concrete finish.

How to fix this? Must seal the edge with waterproof paint to stop the water going inside the plywood veneers.

Bending

Plywood bending within the tolerance are acceptable. If the bending is too much, formworkers have to reject it for concrete use. It becomes unfit for the job.

Delamination

Delamination happens when you use the plywood too many times when it is not bonded with a permanent phenolic glue. Formwork is a temporary construction and it does not require the plywood to be structural. But if you can make the plywood structural with phenolic adhesive then it is better for many problems.

There are different glue types used for marineplex. They can be UF, Melamine UF or Phenolic glue.

Plywood For Concrete Form – China National Standard GB/T 17656-2018

film faced plywood china standard

China National Standard for concrete form plywood was first published in 1999, revised in 2008, and revised in 2018 to GB/T 17656-2018.

It was first proposed by State Forestry and Grassland Administration of China.

The new standard was lead by China Forestry Science Academe Wood Industry Institute. Also some plywood manufacturers, glue manufacturers, construction companies, universities, are involved in the draft of the standard.

Phenolic Board For Philippines

phenolic plywood

Phenolic board is a different name for film faced plywood. It is a term that is especially used in philippines. The reason that pinoy use it is because the black film coated on the plywood surfaces are actually phenolic resin coated.

The Philippines was named in honor of King Philip II of Spain. Spanish explorer Ruy López de Villalobos, during his expedition in 1542, named the islands of Leyte and Samar Felipinas after the then-Prince of Asturias. Eventually the name Las Islas Filipinas was to be used to cover all the islands of the archipelago.

The Philippines is a founding member of the UN, WTO, Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, and the East Asia Summit. It also hosts the headquarters of the Asian Development Bank. The Philippines is considered to be an emerging market and a newly industrialized country, which has an economy transitioning from being based on agriculture to one based more on services and manufacturing. Along with East Timor, the Philippines is one of Southeast Asia’s predominantly Christian nations.

Building Market Demand For Plywood

The fast growing economy is demanding a lot of construction work in major cities of the philippines. Condo, apartments, hospitals, hotels requires huge amount of formwork and concrete jobs. The good quality film faced plywood and phenolic board is needed by the formwork companies. As a main supplier of goods, China is playing big role in supplying building material for this country.

Different Types of Film Faced Plywood in China

film faced plywood phenolic board WBP Plywood

Film faced plywood is a kind of hardwood plywood laminated with black or brown color film. The use of it is for concrete forming and shuttering. Its veneer structure is different from normal commercial plywood. The panel requires higher strength to be used in formwork.

Film Faced Plywood Glue

Film faced plywood made in China uses three types of glue, Urea Formaldehyde Glue, Melamine WBP Glue, Phenolic WBP Glue. Among them, WBP Phenolic is the best kind. WBP means water boiling proof. The WBP plywood can endure more than 72 hours boiling in hot water. UF glue is the normal kind. Melamine glue is better than UF and inferior to the WBP Phenolic.

Film Faced Plywood Core

Poplar Core

The poplar core plywood is light weight and cheap in price. Poplar plywood with WBP melamine glue or phenolic glue has high quality. Poplar veneer is easy to obtain in China thus it is low in price. The poplar plywood are usually non-structural grade.

Hardwood Core

Eucalyptus is a hardwood veneer grown in South China and Vietnam. Chinese plywood manufacturers uses eucalyptus to produce hardwood film faced plywood. Euca ply usually come with WBP melamine or phenolic glue. It is the highest standard structural ply.

Finger Joint Core

Finger joint core plywood is the cheapest film faced plywood. Why do we call it to finger joint? Its main material is a recycled board from the working field. Factories will polish the used plywood and cut them into small pieces. Then they will laminate the blocks with finger joints and glues. This significantly reduces the price. Some formwork companies buy this kind of product to reduce their cost. But there is a risk of using finger joint core plywood that it may break suddenly and cause problems with your work and people.

Knowledges For Purchasing Marine Plywood

Super Thin Film faced plywood

Thin marineplex is not easy to produce. Only a few factories are producing thin film faced plywood like 3.6mm and 4.0mm .They also producing 6,5; 9; 12; 15; 17,18; 21; 24; 27; 30; 35; 40; 50; 60 mm. The thinner ply are easily rejected because of the blisters or bubbles.

Size Tolerance

Size and right angle tolerance meets the customers’s quality requirements. Cut to size sheets and machining available in accordance with the customers’ requirements.

Phenolic Coated Film Colors

Normally chestnut brown or dark brown, also light brown transparent, dark brown, yellow non– transparent and transparent, green, colourless, black, grey, red. More colours on request. Under transparent films BB grade veneer is applied.

  • yellow non-transparent – 167 g/m²
  • red – 220 g/m²
  • grey – 170 g/m²
  • Light brown transparent – 120 g/m²
  • black – 120 g/m²
  • green – 120 g/m²

Glue Standards

Plywood is glued with waterproof phenol formaldehyde resin adhesive. Bonding is resistant to weather and boiling water. It meets requirements of the following standards:

  • EN 314 / 3rd class;
  • BS 1203 / H4 (previously WBP);
  • DIN 68705 Part 3 / type BFU 100.

Edge Sealing

Edges of the marineplex are matched with the face against absorption of moisture by using acrylic paint. Many colors are available.
